The 1000-calorie diet explained

There have always been some variations in diets which are aimed at losing weight. In the 60's we saw the emergence of the Cambridge Diet, which was very restrictive, in the 70's we had the F Plan, which entailed eating plenty of fibre, and since then we have had many newer diets such as the Atkins diet and Lipotrim. However most dieticians agree that if you consume less calories than you use each day you will loose weight and traditionally this method was, and still is, used for weight loss. However with a 1000 calorie a day diet there are some things to you need to bear in mind.

A diet of 1000 calories a day, for a female, will usually result in that person losing weight. A man would probably have the same results on about 1500-1800 calories a day. A point to note is that a man on exactly the same diet, calorie wise, as a woman will always lose more weight as he will need those extra calories. Unfair but true.

Food is the body's fuel and, if you like, keeps our engine working. If you restrict your calories too much and perhaps only consume 750 calories a day, eventually you will not lose weight. Your body will go into starvation mode and begin to cope on the reduced calories, so defeating the object. We also need a balanced diet to ensure that we function well and our body keeps healthy and fit. What point is there in losing weight if you just look a scrawny mess with poor skin, nails and hair?

In the case of us ladies, a 1000 calories a day should ensure that we lose weight safely and relatively quickly or steadily. You will need to take into consideration how much weight overall you need to lose. If you only have half a stone to lose then 1000 calories a day will probably achieve a pound or two weight loss a week. Dieticians would say this is a healthy amount and that the slower we lose the weight the less likely it is to return. Also a varied diet which is not too restrictive should be easier to maintain and be less boring. If you have a few stone to lose 1000 calories a day should give, initially, a much larger weight loss, perhaps even six pounds in the first week. You will need to bear in mind that this weight loss will slow down as you become a lighter person, otherwise you may give up, if you think the diet is no longer working.

The other things to consider are your age and lifestyle. If you are a busy young Mum on a 1000 calorie diet the weight may literally drop of you and perhaps it would be better to adjust your calorie intake to 1200 a day. If you
