Book reviews: The Mote in God's Eye, by Jerry Pournelle

other castes needing to be dominated and instructed by Masters, whether they are the highly intelligent hybrid Mediators, the idoisavant Engineers, mentally limited Porters or even the vermin-like Watch-makers. The appallingly capable warrior caste is hidden away from the eyes of the Human visitors, except for some very unfortunate young midshipmen.

The Humans come from the Second Empire of Man, struggling to reunite the splinter worlds separated by the civil war that destroyed the golden utopia of the First Empire of Man. The politics of which has a significant influence on their interaction with the Moties as well as generating internal conflicts within the investigating starships' complements.

I won't tell you more because, although the story can be read repeatedly, I admit to having envy for those who have yet to read it for the first time. Niven and Pournelle published a sequel in 1993 under the title The Gripping Hand' in the US and The Moat Around Murcheson's Eye' in the UK that is nearly as good and certainly a must for those who have read The Mote in God's Eye'.

I cannot imagine a single person who enjoys science fiction not finding The Mote in God's Eye' an exceptional read that they will add to their own list of personal favorites.
