live only for this world, then it doesn't matter what God has done. What matters then, is simply our place in this cold machine we call life, apart from God. A place where only the strong survive and the weak are left behind, tolerated only as long as they do not get in the way of progress. We become self made gods, worshiping ourselves, and are only accountable to those that would help or hinder our success. The good news of the Christian gospels would certainly be bad news to those of us living like this. To accept it would destroy the very foundations of what we believe we have achieved in this life by our own hands and sweat. Our self made towers and castles would crumble to the ground, our foundations would be like sand swept away in the coming tide. Because in the end, all of this would not save us. In the few remaining moments before we pass from this life, our worldly gods, nowhere to be found, will not be of any use to us and all those things and accomplishments and their meanings to us will die when we do.
So much for the righteousness of mankind.

Those living for the world would exchange the Truth of God for a lie.
The only truth required for a worldly life is the truth of self-serving convenience. What will benefit us, and if necessary, us alone.
What is the sum of all our experiences here in this world, the span of our short lives in comparison to eternity? What is so vital about this life that we would turn our backs on heaven and take our chances on missing out on the life that is eternal?
Our lives here are but a puff of smoke in light of this, here today, gone tomorrow.
I personally would like to continue on into the infinite places with my God, my Creator, and not simply fade from existence as if I never was.
So yes, The gospels are 'good news' if you're truly planning for the future. Even from a worldly perspective, that has always been considered a wise course of action.
But if this world, this life, is all we believe in, then I suppose our expiration date is slightly better than a gallon of milk in your local grocery store.
I suppose we truly need to understand first that our lives here
