Kevin Trudeau's book "Natural Cures 'They' Don't Want You to Know About" was my formal introduction to a world of effective alternative medicine. It built the foundation of what is now a greatly-expanded understanding of the corruption of government by pharmaceutical and insurance companies. I can't believe I didn't notice before.

It seems self evident that pharmaceutical and insurance companies stand to benefit from a sicker population. It makes sense that other industries would prefer a surgical or pharmaceutical approach to "curing" cancer, since cancer is caused by cancer-causing chemicals (called carcinogens, often found in petrochemicals, among many other types of chemicals). The case can be made that virtually every industrial chemical is carcinogenic - so it makes sense that companies that are in the habit of saturating our environment with enormous quantitites of industrial chemicals would prefer we continue to fight a losing battle by giving ourselves cancer and then trying to cure it. God forbid we take preventative measures to reduce the abundance of carcinogens in our environments and in our food.

Although I feel like Mr. Trudeau was a bit simplistic in his explanations of how and why all this is going on, I think his advice is right on target. We need to take a common-sense approach to healthcare that includes diet and lifestyle changes when we have unhealthy diets and unhealthy lifestyles, as a first line of defense. The blind charge into a poisoned environment and the overconsumption of poisoned food have gotten the United States a reputation as the sickest of the developed nations. Perhaps it's time to take a look at what we're doing in terms of healthcare and the effects of such practices.
