manners are always fashionable, no matter what your age! Another item that goes with talking and politeness, do not argue on the first date. This may sound like unnecessary information, but the arguments I am talking about are about personal philosophies. Suppose you and your date pass a person in a mink coat, and she comments "It's a shame some people like draping themselves with dead animals", it will serve no purpose to announce to your date that your uncle runs a very successful fur salon. Volunteer this information only if you want to end the date right then. Squaring off on social issues should be left for future dates (discussions) unless you are both members of debate teams.
Read a newspaper, or watch the news before the date, so you will have some "small-talk" subjects. One of the biggest "death-blows" to a first date, is after the "getting-to-know-you" banter is over, there is that awkward silence that sometimes follows. If you are lucky, you and your date have by now found common ground to talk about, but it never hurts to come prepared with a few current events to discuss.
Relax! While there are things, you can do, to make a first date a pleasure for both of you, the best advice is to just relax. And while you are relaxing, make sure your date is comfortable as well. This is a date, not a job interview. Although I earlier referred a first date to a calculated mission, this is not a "do-or-die" mission, just a date. Enjoy yourself, that IS one of the goals of the date, right? And if things do not go as planned, so be it. Sometimes the best dates are a product of events that went awry.
