Great first date ice breakers

Breaking the ice on a first date is like brushing the teeth of a pit bull, it can be done, but it could get messy. So to make the first date as painless as possible, there are a few icebreaking tips you may want to follow. Some tips are before the date, some are for that first date, this is a calculated mission, so be prepared!

Hopefully before you even asked the date out, you have an idea of what they like. Sports fans like local team games, movie buffs enjoy being the first in line for movie premieres, and foodies like, well, food! Bear in mind, a movie does not lend itself well to conversation during the movie, but if the movie is part of an evening out, with conversation before and especially after, this can be a manageable first date.

If you are the person planning the date, or if the two of you are deciding together, do not make it an all-day event. First dates should be short and sweet, leaving you wanting to see the person again. After the first date, there will be plenty of opportunities to spend an entire day together. Setting yourself up with a basic stranger for over four hours could backfire, and have you wondering if the date will every end!

Everyone loves to talk about themselves, so be curious about your date. While you will want to ask the normal "getting-to-know-you" questions: family, schooling, work, be sure to ask plenty of questions that show you know something about the person before this date. Even if this is a "blind-date", get some information from the person that set this date up, use that information to make some intelligent questions to ask your date. Ask your date open-ended questions, in other words, questions that cannot be answered with just a "yes" or "no". While you are questioning, listen. Do not get so carried away about the next question you are going to ask, that you forget to listen to the answer to the question you just asked! If the date goes well, you will not have asked all the questions you prepared. Each question will springboard a question and the conversation should flow.

Be polite! This means not only will you put your best foot forward; you will not accost your date, should they fail to do so. In other words, ladies, if your date fails to open the car door for you, do not make a scene. On the other hand, if you are accustomed to opening your own door, for tonight, do not be so speedy that you do not give your date a chance to open the doors for you. Brush up on a few of the Ms Manners idioms, and realize that good
