There are differing levels of "roughing" it when camping. Some people consider they're living rough if there's no television or cell phone reception, others can handle that but it's oh so rough to be camping with no electricity or running water...

Camping is rough when there's no running water [hot or cold], no electricity or mobile generator, the closest store is hours away and the only food and comforts you have are those brought in on your own back.

You can be camping rough with a tent as long as the tent is a basic model chosen for its weight [light coz you're carrying it] and weatherproofness not for the number of rooms and mod-cons it comes with.

You are camping really rough when you don't bother with a tent, but use instead a ground sheet [for below or above] and/or use whatever's available to build a shelter.

You know you've been camping rough if you come back exhausted, damp, filthy dirty and smelly!
