Tips for setting realistic goals for your home business

What are realistic goals for your new home business? How big can your business be? How big do you want it to be? How much can you afford to invest? How much time can you devote to this? Is it part-time or your full time job? Answering these questions will move you a long way toward making realistic goals a reality.

Your new business is exciting, isn't it? You believe you will succeed because you have thought this out over a period of time and know exactly what it takes to make the business matter in the world. Before you get too sure of your self, look at the parameters of your situation and ask yourself if your goals are in line with your limitations.

Yes dear business owner you will have limitations. Excitement aside, time is still a precious commodity you will have to manage effectively as you juggle all the jobs you might previously have taken for granted. Can you be the manufacturer, as well as the distributor and seller at the same time? Must you create or order some of your product ahead? If so, one of your goals is to determine the lag time necessary so that you do not have customers waiting for products.

You most likely are not the first person to discover this idea for your business. There will always be someone else that can offer similar if not identical services or products. Another goal should be to identify the quickest, cheapest (while still profitable, of course) methods to get your product ready to sale.

Take the time to think out your whole chain of production, selling, delivering, and billing to see what kind of total time you have from start to finish. Can you carry the costs of production until the payment arrives? If not, you need to determine how to get that figure to where you can, or cut pack on the active orders so you are not juggling bills and loan payments that might sink you before you ever get established.

Decide how you want your workforce to look. Do you want full-time help or temporary workers? This, of course, will be dependent on your particular product, whether it is a seasonal demand item or how much manufacturing is necessary from you to get it to a sellable condition.

How much do you want this to impact your home life? By nature, a home business will infringe upon your home life, especially if your customers come to your home to make purchases or examine your product. You also will have delivery people that will need room to load and unload the different items you require to be moved in and out.

Take the time to thoroughly think out every aspect of your business before making a change, because most changes will have an associated cost. Changing back may create even more delays that dealing with minor inconveniences that you think expansion may solve.
