Challenges of extra-curricular activities for teens

what do you need to look for in your children to determine whether or not they are being over challenged by too much of a good thing? Well, is your child still enjoying the activities? Are they eager to participate or do you have to remind them, and push them to go? Are they academically stable? Do they have ample time to complete their schoolwork, participate in their activities, and still have some downtime? Does the family have any quality time together? If you answered "No" to these questions, then you need to sit down and talk to your teen or child because they may have too many expectations laid upon them, and they may be struggling. As a parent, it is your responsibility to guide your child when making decisions that will impact their academic and emotional future.

Finding the right balance between home, school, and extracurricular activities is not that difficult. Here are some suggestions. Make a designated family night at least once a month, on this night, no one can schedule any activities. Plan this out and mark it on the calendar for the year so there is no question on when it will be. Pledge to have dinner together as a family at least three times a week- even if you have to change your dinner time accommodate, this is bonding time, a time to share stories and talk about what is going on in the lives of each family member. And lastly, make sure that your child has some scheduled down time to relax on their own. Then, when you have all of this figured out, take a look at your child's schedule and see what activities will work with their schedules.

Extracurricular activities should be fun and enriching, not taxing and stressful. With a little bit of careful consideration and time management, you as parents can help your child get the most from these fun filled activities.
