Tips for teaching kids to play basketball

Teaching kids to play basketball is not an easy job because it is a team sport and it is not only a matter of having fun. They need to learn the rules and learn the different techniques which are necessary for handling the ball and may enjoy several health benefits, for example cardiovascular health, stronger and flexible muscles.

It is maybe best to teach them first some basics before they learn playing basketball. Here are some tips which may help you to teach kids basketball:

*Understanding team spirit

Basketball is not an individual sport and it is important kids understand they need to pass the ball to other players of their team. It is important they understand everyone is important in a team and even if they are excellent players, they can't win a game without good team work. Team spirit is important and will help to pass faster balls to other players of their team. No matter which the result will be, they will likely have fun and that is often the highest benefit of playing tennis.

*Teach them to believe in their own capacities

Kids need confidence and to believe in their own capacities. It is important you praise kids when they played very well but it is also necessary to give them advice when they made mistakes in their play. It is possible they didn't pass the ball to another player when someone was in a good position to make a point. Constructive criticism will help the kids to learn from their mistakes and become better players.

*The rules of basketball

It is obvious you know the rules when you want to teach kids playing basketball. They need to know how a basketball is played and how they make points. It is important they know a game is played on a rectangular floor (also called court) and is divided in two parts. They need to know what a hoop is and when they make points. It is also important they understand the rule of three shots. It is important you teach them what is allowed and what is not allowed and they need to know the sanctions they can get. It is important you teach them to play fair and to respect the rules.

*Teach kids the different techniques

There are different techniques necessary to play a basketball game. Catching a ball is probably the first lesson you need to teach them. It is best some experienced players show how to catch a ball. It is important they watch carefully. Let them watch a few times and then you need to give them the chance to play the same techniques. The position of hands and foot is really important when kids
