Have you wondered about that 8th grade classmate with whom you had been best friends for years? Or that college sorority sister who you shared a dorm with Sophomore year? Or maybe you are looking for a long lost relative and all you have is a partial birthdate and a name. The only cost and time effective method is the internet. Start with www.google.com as a convenient source to find any site that has ever referenced the persons name. Here you may find notable accomplishments of the person (publications, websites with employer directories, awards received) which may then provide prompts or clues to other resources. The "web" as it is called is truly that - an intricate web of links and clicks that will send you deeper and deeper into it's chasms as you try to search for the cyber needle in the world wide haystack! From there, another free resource may be found in the series of on-line communities that exist such as www.facebook.com and www.myspace.com where you can simply search for a person's name. Another similar resource are the various email providers (yahoo, aol, hotmail) which provide "search" prompts to locate subscribers. Yellow and white pages are now available on-line and should not be excluded as possible sources of information. If the friend you search for is from school, you would be wise to check alumni directories. The bottom line is that the internet is, hands down the largest compilation of data at your fingertips. So before you pull out your wallet and type all of your personal information into a site and pay $14.95 for one shot at people finder, try all the search prompts that are offered free of charge.
