Academic freedom and teacher choice in curriculums

Teachers should be considered highly qualified individuals who are allowed some autonomy within their scope and sequence. The old days of worksheets should be long gone and not brought back. When a teacher is creative with their presentations and engage the students, optimal learning occurs. Teachers who think they need to lecture the entire class period are misguided also. Students lose focus in less than ten minutes. Plus, I also believe in the statement I learned as an undergraduate education major - "He who does the work learns the material."

I firmly believe in multiple intelligences learning. Student's have an intelligence in which they learn best. Some students are visual learners, some auditory, some kinesthetic and some students feel more comfortable working alone. Teachers should have the freedom to design activities that will best serve their students. When the students are engaged in the activities because it is interesting them, they will learn best. I also believe since standardized testing is a national requirement, when the students are engaged, they score higher on these tests.
When a teacher is passionate about the curriculum, their enthusiasm carries over to the students. If a teacher has been given the independence to develop their own plans, they feel empowered. Once again this empowerment transfers into the lesson and wins the students' attention, drive to succeed, and ultimately their hearts.
