Product reviews: Aquamira water bottle with filter

Cyclists are, at heart, minimalists, so it should not come as any surprise that we scoff at the notion of lugging drinking water or filtration systems on extended tours on rural routes or trails. Aquamira acknowledges this demand in the design and thoughtful functionality of its Water Bottle and Filter system.

The Aquamira filtration system consists of a 22 oz. water bottle and an attached filter, mouthpiece, and cap. The bottle itself is a standard cycling water bottle that fits your bike's existing bottle cage.

The integrated filter sets Aquamira's system apart. Situated at the neck of the bottle, the activated carbon filter actually functions while you drink. This means no waiting for drops or a separate filter to make your water safe; just fill the bottle and drink.

Aquamira's innovative system filters contaminants two microns and larger, making it suitable for most applications where waterborne viruses are not an issue. Forcing water through the filter does require some effort, though the extra work is certainly worth the convenience of having safe water on demand.

Testers really appreciated the fill and drink capability of the bottle. Because no waiting is required, you can actually enjoy cold water from a stream while it is still cold. The primary complaint was that the bottle didn't hold more water, but the issue was easily resolved by carrying "backup" bottles of unfiltered water.

The Aquamira Water Bottle and Filter retails for twenty dollars. Filters last around 200 bottles, depending on the silt content of the water source. Replacement filters retail for ten dollars. Aquamira's filtration system is an excellent option for safe and convenient drinking water at a reasonable price.
