As a mother of new twins, I tried breast feeding, as a matter of fact I was set on breast feeding! I stopped after a month! I had to figure out quickly what formula to use. Unfortunately, I never got to pick and choose brands. I know how confusing that can be though. There are ads everywhere I look, in magazines and on coupons. I didn't have to worry about the brand, because I am on WIC and they, unfortunately only back one brand.
I started my twins out on advance with iron, because their cousin drank it and was fine. I found out very quickly that my children did not agree so well with that, they became extremely gassy.
Next, I moved onto the isomil, soy-based formula. That worked great for them, they weren't as gassy anymore. I, however was sick to my stomach every time I made them bottles. I have nothing against soy, but it sure does stink.
After a while, my son started getting more gassy again. So, I moved them onto the sensitive, or lactose free formula. They did great, no gas, no fuss!
While this worked for my children, I understand that it will not work for everyone's. Everytime I changed their formula, I consulted their doctor first. I also gave them ample time to adjust to the new formula, per their doctor's orders.
However, we ran out of their sensitive formula at one point and I found an unopened can of isomil formula stashed in the back of the cabinet. I proceeded to make them bottles from that. To my completely shock, my son began vomiting profusely about an hour after his bottle. I freaked out.
I have found he does that every time he has the isomil formula, which he has only had one more time after that. It resulted in the same effect, exorcist baby!
I haven't given it to him since then.
What this all boils down to is that new mothers, even again mothers should always consult the baby's doctor when it comes to what type of formula their baby should eat. They should trust the doctor and also their own mothering instincts.
Sometimes, mothers really do know what is best for their children!
