to say. As I turned to leave the barn, I noticed a lump covered in a tarp by the door. Weird I thought. I waved good bye and decided to talk with Margaret Peese she ran the feed store. If I hurried I could catch her before she left for the day.
There were no customers inside the feed store the perfect time to ask a few questions.
"Hi there, Mrs. Peese."
"Howdy Billy, what can I help you with?" she asked.
"Did you hear about Mr. Libely's scarecrow?"
"I did, he came in this morning and paid on some of his bill and he told me he saw someone steal his scarecrow. I don't know who would do something like that. It is terrible and Job is pretty upset about it. You know he lives for this contest every year."
"I am looking into his case. So if you can think of anything that might help out, I would appreciate it," I explained to Mrs. Peese.
"Well you know come to think of it, Jada was in earlier today, gabbing about her scarecrow will definitely win first prize. She went on and on about her idea is so creative. Then I told her about Job and how someone stole his scarecrow. She got this funny look on her face and ran on out of here. Jada acted weirder than she normally does."
"Thanks for the information."
Mrs. Peese's story confirmed my own thoughts about Miss Brown. I had to make sure she was the one who stole the scarecrow. Dad always told me to have all the facts before accusing someone. There was one last person to talk with, Sarah Christian. My gut told me Jada Brown stole the scarecrow.
I rode back into town to Mrs. Christian's home. After ringing the bell, she threw open the door, I heard yelps in the background.
"Hi there Billy, what can I help you with?"
"Hi, Mrs. Christian, I was wondering if you heard about what happened to Mr. Libely?" I asked.
"Oh come in. I was up all night with my girl Sadie, she had her pups. Margaret called me this morning and told me someone stole Job's scarecrow. I couldn't believe when she told me. I may not like the Fall Festival but stealing something that belonged to someone else that is just plain wrong. I don't know why anyone would do it. You wanna see the pups?"
Nodding, I followed her to her black lab nursing six puppies. She asked if I wanted one and I said that I would have to ask my parents. I let myself out. All the clues pointed to Jada Brown, her jealously of Mr Libely and his scarecrow, her unusual behavior, her proximity and she has a dog. I went home and talked with my dad. After hearing my story he agreed with the conclusion and called the sheriff.
An hour or so later Dad and I met the sheriff Miss Brown's farm. She rushed out of her house and demanded some answers. The sheriff calmly explained why he was there. Her face fell to a frown and reluctantly led us to the barn and uncovered Freddie.
Dad and I took Freddie back to Mr. Libely who was happy to have him back. Needless to say Mr. Libely didn't press charges. When the Fall Festival arrived Jada Brown didn't enter the contest at all and Mr. Libely won the blue ribbon for the 35th time.
