Short stories: The scarecrow mystery

he heard a dog, which eliminated Mr. Sayers because everyone in town knows he is allergic to dogs, of course he wouldn't have a dog with him. However, I thought it would be a good idea to talk with him anyway and see if he heard anything. He may not like Mr. Libely all that much but he is man who does the right thing.
Mr. Sayers lived closer to town and on the same road as Mr. Libely. I parked my bike next to the garage and rang the bell. Mrs. Sayers answered the door and offered me cookies. I politely declined and asked to see Mr. Sayers. She told me he was in the workshop. Crossing the yard to a little wooden building, I found Mr. Sayers tinkering away at a chair.

"Excuse me, Mr. Sayers," I began, "I was wondering if I could have a word with about Mr. Libely's scarecrow."
"Billy? How's your dad doing?"
"He's good."
"What about his stupid scarecrow?" Mr. Sayers asked.
"Well it was stolen last night and I was wondering if you knew anything about it?"
"Just because that old quack lost his scarecrow, you think I took it?"
"No, the person had a dog with them so I know it can't be you. I was just wondering if you heard or saw anything about 10:00 pm last night?"
"Sorry son, no I was in bed by then me and the wife. Good luck though, I hope you solve the case don't care if he gets his scarecrow back or not."
"Thanks Mr. Sayers."
Mounting the bike again, I decide to head the other way to Jada Brown's house. When I arrived at her driveway, a huge golden retriever barked at me. She appeared at the porch and waved me over.
"Well Billy what brings you by?" she asked with a big smile on her face.
"Did you hear about Mr. Libely's scarecrow?" I asked.
She flinched some, "no what about it?"
"Someone stole it last night and he said he heard a dog when he went outside."
"What does that have to do with me?"
"Well I am just asking folks around here, if they saw anything or not? You know Mr. Libely loves making his scarecrows. I'm just trying to help him out."
"I don't know anything. I am too busy finishing my scarecrow. I think this year is the year I'm gonna win that blue ribbon. You wanna see her, Billy?" she asked excitedly.
"Sure, why not." I followed her to the barn and before me stood this haphazard scarecrow with a dress full of holes. The scarecrow wore a purple hat. I almost laughed at her creation but held it in.
"What do you think, Billy? Pretty good huh?"
"Yeah sure, I think you might win a prize this year."
It seemed evident that Miss Brown had nothing of interest
