P.S. I Love You is the perfect way to spend a Saturday at the movies with you best friend. We laughed, cried and cheered for Holly Kennedy devastated by her husband's death, played by Gerard Butler -even hunkier here than in "The 300". In this film, he is every woman's dream of a perfect husband (even if Holly tries hard to push him away while he's alive). Although killed off ten minutes into the movie, Butler takes over the screen in numerous flashbacks, dragging Holly (kicking and screaming) from mind-numbing grief back into life; Through letters written prior to his death from a brain tumor, he encourages, cajoles and shoves Holly back to the land of the living. Along the way, Kathy Bates adds depth and emotion to the story through her portrayal of Holly's bitter mother and Lisa Kudrow makes you laugh as only she can. Harry Connick, Jr. comes across a bit dorky; it would have been nice to see him used better; he makes a great romantic lead when given the chance. But his portrayal of Holly's first "post Jaimie" suitor is fun to watch, especially his social "gaffs" as he pursues her. And then there's Jeffrey Dean Morgan, while only on screen a short time, Dean steals our hearts as Holly's husband's cousin and possible future suitor.
Throughout this film, we see friends and family interacting to help Holly heal; in the end it is her dead husband who brings her back to life; using his intimate knowledge of her quirks and inner demons to open her up to life again. Swank makes Holly believable and despite her previous "tough girl" roles, she makes us love and root for Holly as much as we did her character of Maggie Fitzgerald in "Million Dollar Baby".
