Buying Silicone Bakeware
There are many different companies making Silicone Bakeware and each company has a different formula for making it. Therefore it is important to know what you should be looking for when buying silicone bakeware.
Silicone bakeware is sold at Target listing 175 different silicone products made by different companies such as Kitchen Essentials from Calphalon, Silicon Solutions, Silicon Zone, lsi Flexible Silicon, Silpat Baking sheets, and Orka Personal Silicone steamer. There are probably more companies. I only looked at a few pages.
Each company has instructions for how to use silicone bakeware with varying heat indexes. For instance Silicone Zone withstands temps up to 572 degrees Fahrenheit.
lsi Flexible Silicone is oven safe up to 490 degrees Fahrenheit. Orka is oven safe to 430 degrees Fahrenheit. Most Silicone products cap out at 500 degrees Fahrenheit.
So when buying your Silicone Bakeware it is important to make sure there are good instructions and that you always follow the instructions when using Silicone Bakeware.
There are many companies selling Silicone Bakeware also such as Amazon.com has Kitchen Aid Silicone Bakeware. Then there is buysmartware.com whose silicone product is called Temperflex. It withstands temperatures of minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit to 428 degrees Fahrenheit.
There is also Exopat at (www.chefsresource.com/matprof exbak.html). Excopat is a laminated sheet of rubberized food-grade silicon and reinforced with a basic woven fabric of silicone that never affects taste. It is FDA and NSF approved and withstands temps of minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit to 580 degrees Fahrenheit.
Not all silicone bakeware indicated whether it was FDA approved, so I believe that would be an important consideration to choosing which silicone product to buy. Also some companies said you could use the product 2000 times and others 3000 times, so usable rate is also important.
Purchasing silicone bakeware also depends on how much you bake. If you bake a lot, silicone may not be for you. It wears out fast. If you do choose silicone, choose the most durable and the commercial grade of heavy silicone rather than lightweight.
Excopat and Silicone Zone are commercial grade Silicone bakeware.
All silicone products I looked at on the web were freezer, oven, microwave, and dishwasher safe.
Silicone bakeware can be used in either the microwave or the oven making this a very saleable feature, since the majority of households today use both the microwave and a regular convection oven.
The most important consideration when buying silicone bakeware is the instructions. Make sure you get instructions with your bakeware. There are specific ways to use silicone bakeware and they vary with each company.
