There are some really silly things being said here in defense of "not believing in God". The most obvious giggle-inducing statement or concept is the oft-repeated idea that "faith" isn't a good reason for belief. Let's look at that for a moment.
Can it be proven that God exists? Some say yes, some say no. Different people want different forms of proof. Some people wouldn't accept any form of proof at all. Yes, one must have faith to believe in God, because God's entire program of saving people is based on faith. That is his stated method. However, for the purpose of this argument, let's just say one cannot prove that God exists (I don't agree with that, however). Faith then, is necessary to believe.
Suppose then that you don't believe in God. Why don't you believe God exists? Because in your mind, there is no proof? Then tell me, what proof do you have that he doesn't exist? Do you require "scientific proof of the existence of God" to believe? Then what "scientific proof" do you have that God doesn't exist? Let's hear it! Come on, prove it! I don't mean philosophically, I mean apply the same standard to your belief that God doesn't exist that you would require to prove that he does. You can't do that can you?
Then let me ask you this: what is your belief or opinion that there is no God based upon? If you have no facts to back that up, just a lack of belief, you are relying on blind faith. You are believing something without proof, just as you are accusing those who believe in God of doing. Believing in something that cannot be proven is faith, whether it is for or against the existence of God. You have faith in your own opinion. You may have faith in what others have said who hold a similar viewpoint as you do. It doesn't matter who they are, they can't prove it either, and their opinion is based on faith that whatever they are using to justify their belief (or lack of it) is right.
So you don't like faith? Then stop using it! Stop saying there is no God! At best, all you can say is that you have decided to put your faith in an unprovable concept because you just don't like the idea of there being a God, or because God doesn't fit into your personal mold for him.
You can dream up any reason you like not to believe in the existence of God. When you base your conclusion on those reasons, you are putting your faith in your own mind, your own reasoning powers, your own biases and thoughts. It is faith, no matter how you look at it. Everyone has faith in something, we all get to freely choose where to put it.
