This is a second hand story that is based upon alleged events. Two good friends of mine are involved, and over the course of twenty-five years, their story hasn't changed. Neither are particularly religious, so getting either to swear to it on a Bible would be fruitless. A good place to start might be to bring up a particular anomaly called Pwdre Ser, which literally translates into "rot from the stars." It is a Welsh phrase, and the idea is that from time to time organic slop falls from the sky. Honestly, this is just one explanation for what happened during a teenage hunting trip many years ago. I'll let you decide.
There were four of us that grew up in the same neighborhood, Jim, John, Dwayne, and myself, and we were constantly engaged in shooting sports. It's just what one does in north central West Virginia. On this particular warm November morning, the four of us took a ride to Preston County to hunt squirrels. As usual, we split up. Dwayne and I went one way, and Joh and Jim took another route. It was a pretty mundane trip from our point of view, but we would soon find out that our friends had a bit more excitement.
We returned to the car for lunch only to find John and Jim arguing about something. The odd thing is that they both looked more than a little bit flustered. It wasn't a violent argument, but it was a bit odd...
"Why did you grab my gun like that?" John asked.
"You would have shot THAT thing," Jim answered. "What the hell was it anyway?
Dwayne was a couple years older than the rest of us, and he stepped in and got things calmed down a little bit. The other guys then started to relate an odd tale that has stuck with me for a number of years, and Pwdre Ser is the closest explanation I have, even though it doesn't really work that well. If they didn't see "rot from the stars", some sort of UFO is the only other choice, but...I just don't know.
After splitting from Dwayne and I, the other two boys walked through the woods for a while, and I suppose they created the usual havoc. Both had hair triggers and made for dangerous hunting buddies back then, and both were prone to exagerate a bit. After a while, Jim caught sight of "something" that caught him completely off guard. He got John's attention, and both were transfixed upon a floating object that each has described as resembling frog eggs. Meaning, it was jelly-like and had black dots throughout. They have described this mass as being about the size of a car. As they stared at it, John raised his gun and was about to bring it down but was stopped by Jim. As if on cue, whatever this thing was rapidly flew out of sight.
You would think that the story would have either changed or have been recanted after all of these years. This hasn't been the case; both tell the story with the same detail as if it occurred yesterday, and each of them tells nearly the same tale down to the last detail. How do you argue with that? Strange things happen in these mountains: Mothman haunted Point Pleasant throughout 1967, and the Flatwoods Monster landed in Braxton County some years earlier. Neither story is much more or less fantastic than the one my friends still tell. A couple of years ago I came across a book, UNEXPLAINED, by Jerome C. Clarke, and I showed the Pwdre Ser excerpt to my friends. All agreed that it is one possibility, but they are still convinced that it was otherworldly and acted with intelligence. At any rate, it's an interesting mystery that appears to be beyond solving.
