Politicians should not be in the fund-raising business. Money is influence, and politicians are held accountable for their political actions by those that fund their campaigns. My solution is to take fund-raising out of politics.

There could be a television station similar to CNN or CSPAN where politicians could discuss their agendas, policies, and debates. This channel would not cost the politicians a cent. The government could pay for the normal cost of running the campaign. If a politician accepts money, then it should be considered as unethical and a bribe, causing the politician to be ineligible to run for office. If influence through campaign contributions was taken out of the equation, then the focus is on what the voters expect from their elected officials.

Some campaign contributers such as the tobacco and auto industries know that if they lost their influence by making it illegal to give money to politicians, then they would be more vulnerable to laws that protect the environment and public health. Also, most large industry and labor unions are funding politicians leaving politicians in a tough position on deciding whether to vote in the best interest of their campaign supporters or in the best interest of their constituencies.
