Great finds for decorating a dorm room

Dorm room decoration is what it is. It's a lot more about function than form. A dorm room is not somewhere most students stay permanently, but instead for a school year or two, so as long as it's comfortable and study friendly that's all that matters. Besides function, dorm room decoration is usually also a product of the times, and what is important to the youth of the day, even if what's important to the youth of the day is retro, i.e., what was important to the youth of yesteryear. So, basically, what you need to know going into searching for dorm room decor is to look for items that are popular, functional, comfortable, and, more than likely, cheap, because college students aren't really known for their carefulness.

Before you do anything else you should try to coordinate with your roommate(s), if possible. That way maybe you two can decide on a singular theme and avoid double buying certain items. Next, find out what furniture comes with the dorm room, so you know what you don't need to buy. Also, find out the dorm room measurements, if possible. Some general items you'll probably need include: towels, pillows, computer desk, bedding, lamps, chairs, plastic storage containers, bookshelves, printer stand, and a large throw rug. Good places to start your shopping include: garage sales, thrift stores, dollar stores, Wal-Mart, Target, and online.

Dorm room decoration is very much a product of the time, comfort, functionality, and tax bracket. It should serve to help students with their studies and self-expression without breaking their backs or the bank.
