Chapter 3: The Finding
I stepped out into the front porch. I still couldn't understand why nobody would believe me. I know I saw a dragon flying over the forest. Bobby had his face stuck to the window and was making gruesome faces at me. I ran down the steps to the large red barn. At least the animals couldn't ridicule me for it.
The wind blew as I tried to open the large wooden door to the barn. I could've sworn I heard the flapping of leather wings somewhere on the land behind me. I turned and saw nothing but the land that was barren from the drought.
Nervously, I swung the door open and ran inside. I leaned on the door, staring at the dirt floor. Why was I so nervous? Maybe they were right. Maybe I was cracking up. I let out a long breath and walked to the back of the barn. It was dark and I couldn't see anything other than
the outline of the horses and cows that were watching me as I crossed the floor.
I sat down on a stool next to the stable that held my horse, Suzy. "I am not nuts," I mumbled to myself and to her as she stood inside munching hay. I stood up and opened the stable door.
"You're awfully quiet today," I said. Usually she would start making a lot of noise whenever somebody entered the barn at night.
I reached out to pet her and drew my hand back after I did. Instead of soft warm fur, I felt cold scales. Quickly, I struck a match and lit the lantern that was hanging on the post. The light flooded the room and I saw a large emerald dragon, with wide wings and kind yellow eyes.
I drew in a sharp breath and backed up towards the barn door. What had happened to the horse? Did it eat it? Scared,I turned and ran with t have he lantern in my hand. I struggled to open the door and escape to the outside, but it wouldn't open.
"I'm sorry if I scared you," a voice said from behind me. I turned slowly and the dragon was awake and sitting up. "I've come back because my homeland is in need of help and only you can help us."
