I know of someone, she wouldn't want accolades. Each year she hosts a party - for four, five and now six year old girls. These little ones have great fun playing and looking inside their goodie bags. These are girls who have birthday parties and play dates. They go to stage plays and take music and ballet lessons. Fortunately, they have everything they need - plus waaaay too many toys.

Today - interspersed between the laughter and running around and whispering about how "dumb" little boys are, they'll also be presented with the concept of doing something nice to help someone else, someone they don't even know. They'll hear of people who might not be warm enough or have the material things that they're growing up with. Their beautiful little faces will grow serious for a moment, their eyes big with new thoughts still beyond their imaginations.

Then they'll all gather around and learn to make pretty blankets out of fleece material of many different colors and patterns. Each girl allowed to choose her favorite color or pattern for her creation. They'll chatter happily as they learn a new skill and enjoy a new concept. They'll learn the pleasure of making something pretty that they might enjoy keeping for themselves. They'll have the new pleasurable feeling of unselfishly giving it away - their new accomplishment making a stranger happy. Not taking it home for their Mom to ooh and ahh over. They'll learn that it can feel good to put forth effort to make an unknown stranger happy.

This unnamed mom embeds an important lesson into a day of fun. A hundred proclamations of "be kind to others" couldn't be as effective. God Bless her for perpetuating kindness in a world that's increasingly saturated with violence.
