Beginner's guide to poker

ranked on the value of the paired card, e.g. A beats 2. Note, in the situation of two players holding the same pair, such as player one with 4 4 9 K 3 and player two with 4 4 8 3 7, the hands are ranked by the highest X card. Player one wins, as K outranks 8. If the highest X card is the same, then you compare the next highest card, and so on.
- 'High card': A hand in which none of the above exists - no cards share the same rank, not all cards are in sequential order nor all of the same suit. For example, 2 3 8 9 J (not all of the same suit) or 5 7 9 K A (not all of the same suit). This is the worst hand and is ranked based on the highest ranked card a player has. If these equal then go to the next highest card, and so on.

BASIC OF ALL POKER GAMES:
In the many poker games, several things hold true to all:
1) Whether you are dealt 5 cards, 2 cards, have the option to exchange cards or to select cards, you must for the best hand (5 card set) that you can.
2) Don't allow other players to know you hand, and don't give any clues as to its strength.
3) You compare your hand to that of other players to determine the winner.

Knowing the ranking of the hands is essential to poker. There is too many varieties to go through them all here, but for the beginner I recommend draw poker. In more complicated games, you need to bet at various stages and in a defined order (e.g. Texas Hold'em).

Good luck to all the beginners out there. Poker can be a very enjoyable way to pass the time.
