Turning sixty isn't the end of the world, for some of us its the beginning of a lifestyle that says, "finally, after giving so much of myself to others, I can do some things for myself." For my sixtieth birthday I went on a hot balloon ride in the afternoon and sang karaoke in the evening.
The balloon ride was my second choice of course, I would have preferred a helicopter ride touring the metropolitan area near my own little village. But the balloon ride proved to be a wonderful experience and the panoramic view was spectacular.
I'm so thankful that my friends and family still view me as the adventurous oddball that I've always been to them. Never content to maintain the status quo, I'm there when there is adventure in the air.
Music was always a big part of my expression in life. In high school, college and beyond, I sang solo at many functions -parties, churches, weddings and funerals. So it was natural to get up in front of a crowd and belt out a few show tunes and some soft romantic ballads. What a night that was. I'll remember it.
The point is, know the person you're planning the party for and use what you know to make it a great unforgettable experience for them. It's safe to say that we slow down as we age, but its also safe to say that our personalities don't change as much as some people seem to think.
Our values do change somewhat and it's true that we do value our families more when we understand that they are irreplaceable. I have a large role in my grandson's life and I wouldn't trade it for anything. But when it comes to adventure, I have to convince him to take that journey.
The birthday events were more than I hoped for but when it was time for presents, my family and friends came through again. Knowing how I loved electronic gadgets, a new cel phone was given to me to enjoy and keep in touch. I might have enjoyed a new digital camera more, but I already have two of them.
I would have loved to have a new computer, but that's pushing the envelope because they had already given me a fun filled memorable day to remember, and it was much better than a laptop.
If you're giving a birthday party for a 60 year old, I suggest that you take a good look at their interests and life style. I never cared for old blue eyes, he was before my time. Play some Van Morrison CDs and we're cooking.
