Romantic vacations in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico, though technically a US territory, has a beauty and appeal that rivals its Caribbean neighbors. It is an archipelago with miles of beautiful beaches and an inland replete with romantic destinations.

Even though Puerto Rico has many breathtaking treasures on land, the sea has a lot to offer as well. To get around, many visitors opt to pay for a yacht charter. Sailing the sea provides a great introduction and overview of the islands. Scuba diving is also another way to take advantage of the sea and discover the territory's more hidden sights. When diving, prepare yourself for a sea of coral reefs and vibrantly colored fish, crabs, and even seahorses. This area is such a popular destination for underwater sightseeing that it is considered one of the top 20 diving destinations in the world.

You've never hiked or walked anywhere as you will in Puerto Rico. Many hikers gravitate towards the islands lush flora. A guided tour can be taken through the Caribbean National Forest (also known as El Yunque), a 28,000 acre forest of diverse vegetation and fauna spread through four ecosystems. This jungle is as magical and romantic as any you will find in North America. Togo Negro Forest Reserve and Carite Forest Reserve both offer spectacular wildlife surreal enough to transport you to another world. At least in theory.

Hiking is great, but what better way to wind down than to horseback along the coast with your significant other, the ocean reflecting the sun's rays like diamonds in the backdrop? Several companies offer guided horse trails or even horse back lessons for the novice. Some trails are situated along the beach, while others venture inland into indigenous forests, providing a salient landscape nonetheless.

Water and sea collide at tantalizing Karst Country, an area south of Arecibo in Puerto Rico. Carbonic acid levels in the water erode limestone structures to create a system of ever-changing caves and canyons that is the third largest in the world.

Now that you are convinced about traveling to Puerto Rico, where do you stay? Isla Verde, home of the finest beach in Puerto Rico, also holds the ESJ Towers, a tourist holding that grants the luxury of a hotel and the convenience of home. Indeed its 1, 2, and 3 bedroom suites and studios have fully equipped kitchenettes, bathrooms, king-size beds, and cable TV, not that you'll have time to watch.

For a little more peace and quiet, try the Villas Del Mar Beach Resort. Although it is 14 miles from the capital of San Juan, it is only minutes away from shopping, golf courses, and El Yunque. Also nearby are ferries to the exquisite islands of Culebra and Vieques. This hotel is also fully furnished and has 3 bedroom, 2 bath suites that house 6-8 tourists.

If you want to flirt with the wind, Ocean Park is the place to be. This San Juan coastal area has a wide ocean front and offshore reefs that prevent large waves from reaching the shore. Strong seasonal onshore trade winds make kite surfing and windsurfing popular in this trendy area of Puerto Rico. Ocean Park has many hotels and bed and breakfast inns, along with restaurants and shopping destinations.

Regardless of your idea of what a romantic destination should be, Puerto Rico has the sights and sounds that make this territory amongst the most desired and memorable in the world.
