Fixing you own computer by yourself is not very difficult at all. Here are some basics.

Maintenance:

1- Once a week check your entire computer for Virus
2- Once a week check your entire computer for Spyware
3- Once a week check your entire computer for Adware
4- Once a month run the Scan Disk to check if your computer has errors.
5- Once a month run the Windows Defrag.

The above list shows some basic precautions you should have with your machine.

Now more serious things:

Check you internet status with an online scanner. If it is slower than it should be, maybe your computer is infected with trojans or spyware. If that is the case, maybe your security program is out of date. You should download the latest definitions and make a full scan on your machine.

Check you hard disk for damaged sectors. As it is used, your hard disk can get damaged, it is a piece of machinery that you cant rely on 100%. You can either run an online scan or download a program specialized in hard disk scans. Run the program. Read carefully the report. If it says you should get a new hard disk, get one fast! Because you can loose all your precious information! Add to that a back up program to ensure that in case your hard disk fails, at least you have one safe copy of the content.
