Is mixed martial arts really a sport?

Is Mixed Martial Arts really a sport? That's the question burning into the minds of all combat sport lovers, is it a sport? Can these critics define sport? I certainly can. Sport is an athletic activity requiring skill and physical prowess and often of a competitive nature. Can anyone tell me what part of that isn't MMA? I didn't think so.

The barbaric nature and sheer violence of the early MMA fights and events is what has caused this uproar of complaints, the lack of weight classes and rules seemed to disturb the minds of the cable companies, the television networks and the politicians. Brands like the UFC and Pride now headline the MMA events and it is spreading vastly to all corners of the globe.

Since its conception MMA has grown a fair bit rule wise and event wise, with pay-per views raking in the millions of viewers and house shows selling out in boxing home turf, the Las Vegas strip. The skeptics will say its nothing but a bloodbath, or call it human cockfighting but they are so sadly mistaken.

Mixed martial arts is a combination of all of the martial arts, including kickboxing, Muay Thai, boxing, judo, wrestling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, tae kwon do, karate and kung fu. To master it you must be well rounded in all of these styles and be prepared for a fight, becoming an expert in only one of these fields is useless if you have to defend against something you have no idea about, this in itself is competitive enough to be described as sport.

Skeptics will often describe MMA as nothing but two idiots beating the hell out of each other, but I ask them isn't that exactly what boxing has come from? Those old Queensbury rules that drew the crowds in the first place is what has made boxing the worlds most famous combat sport. Boxing was once considered a 'blood sport' and now is one of classiest sports in the entire world, and now because the MMA has taken some of your precious fans you think it is needed to put it down?

MMA is at its birth stage and cannot be classified into anything else but entertaining its fun to watch and has every credential any other sport has, so everyone needs to grow up and accept the fact that mixed martial arts is here to stay.
