Satan is, for now, confined to the reaches of the earth. "The LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Satan answered the LORD, "From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it." Job 1:7, NIV. And he is our adversary. "Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." 1 Peter 5:8, NIV.
Imagine the most sinister individual on earth (Jeffrey Dahmer is a good lead, or Hitler), and magnify their wickedness exponentially. This is your spiritual enemy and the host of hell. No wonder God made a special place for Satan! Your enemy's goal is to keep you from God, or turn you away from God with hatred or mistrust. In doing so he not only steals something precious from God but also destroys you. He hates God and you remind him of God. "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them." Genesis 1:27, NIV.
Imagine someone that wants to be your best friend or your husband or wife, and they shower you with affection. You don't respond. They may hold out for your affection for a long time, but don't you think that after a time they will move on from you? This is how God is. He offers himself to us in love and grace, but if we continue to harden our hearts against him he will move on and allow us that choice.
In conclusion, while there is much darkness and suffering in this life, God is still accessible to us as we walk on earth. Hell can be bypassed. I dare not imagine a place where God cannot be found. I choose life.
"For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent and live!" Ezekiel 18:32.
