Lost and Found
Peter Kraft and his sister Lilly spent most of the afternoon
putting up the Dog Lost signs all over the neighborhood.
They spent over $7 at the local print shop in order to make
sure the likeness of their missing Shyler was accurate. They
believed they did not want to make the same mistake the growing
number of other recent posts for missing canines had made.
Shyler was a no leash dog. A local. The small town of Rocky
Creek all knew Shyler and if she got loose for too long, for
too far there was always someone who knew her and could call
the Kraft house for one of the kids to come fetch her.
Billy Warrant and Eddie Kirk were always trying to lure Shyler
away to accompany them over to Flat Rock Creek to be a lookout for
snakes or other varmints while they fished or played hooky.
Billy and Eddie had lost their old hound dog about a month
earlier, but had become so attached to Shyler they promised to
aid in the search. The four searchers created a circular perimeter
on a map and set out to search until sundown. They ended up on
the Kraft's porch by early evening sipping warm cider and sharing
their disappointing results.
"Hey look!" said young Lilly. "The high school team must be having a
pep rally in the woods over there! You can see the bonfire!"
"You crazy girl!" replied Eddie. "Football has been over a month. Since
they lost the semi-state. My older brother has been sulking about it for
weeks now. He's been acting like a big idiot."
"Well something is on fire."
The boys all lit off the porch and onto their bikes in a flash. Poor
Lilly left behind. Their speed slowed quite a bit as the paved road
became dirt heading out into the woods.
"Ow! My head! That hurts!" screeched Billy.
"Mine too!" exclaimed Peter.
"It's that stinging kind of pain you feel in your temples when you dive
too deep into a pool or the lake and the pressure changes on you quick!"
said Eddie.
The air was filled with a buzzing sound. The light around the trees in the
distance started to become brighter. All of a sudden a large metal craft
appeared over head. They boys fell off their bikes and cowered in the dirt.
Peter opened his eyes a bit to see it fly over only to be semi blinded like
the result of some flash camera.
The woods grew dark. Quickly. The boys sat quietly as the stars overhead
became as bright as the city lights looking down from Warner Hill. The night
air was now getting a bit cool for late Fall.
"I'm going home" said Billy.
"Wait! What are we going to tell them?" said Peter.
"Tell who? I ain't gonna say
