Short stories: A historical mystery

Sir Steven Trevaine plastered himself against a building around the corner, his breath misting in the freezing rain. His heart pounded solidly in his chest, adrenaline coursing through his veins, his senses on high alert, awaiting a most dire fate. They had found him somehow, and he had no idea how that could be.
In his business, once you disappeared, you made sure that stayed hidden, or else..

That or else echoed through his brain, as he squeezed himself tighter against the wall, scrambling, trying to think of a way to get out of the alley way alive without the men seeing him and shooting him dead.
It had all began earlier in the day, when Sally had come to visit him. She had been asking when he thought they could get away, when he thought that he might ask her to be his bride. Well, to be honest, he had other things moving around in his head at that point, and understandably, she had been hurt.
More to the point, he had been worried about how to keep himself alive, and keep her from being caught in the game that he played.Sally had no idea just how powerful he had become, or how other men would kill to make sure that fell down the ranks, to be extinguished permanently. Then, a few hours after she had left, the men had come..
Outside, as soon as he had left his one bedroom bachelor's residence, they had been there, waiting for him, as if someone had revealed his location. Which was almost totally impossible, since he had only told three other souls..
Thomas, his best friend and confidante, Ellis, Lord Blakely, the only man in a higher position in the ranks than him, and Sally, his fiancee.
Well, Steven decided, Sally could have been his fiancee. Now, all that was left was an empty feeling, a cold hard truth.. He definitely had to make sure to find a better best friend, either that, or his own lovely Sally had betrayed him somehow, for some reason that he could not possibly fathom.
Bam!
Steven flinched, the shots were getting closer now. Sooner or later they would come, and would be as good as dead. No matter how careful he had been, no matter the amount of precautions, they would come to get him and he would never know the true meaning of love and happily ever after...
