There is a place that is a wonderland of crafts and craft ideas. it is not used as often as it should be and half the fun is going there with the kids. I am talking about your local dollar store and for a few dollars the kids will be busy for hours.
The important thing when perusing the dollar store is look for the items that are unfinished wood, material, even china. These items can be painted, stickered, and glued with a multitude of objects from beads to feathers. All of these items are available at the dollar store.
I will give you an example of crafts that my kids went crazy for. My children are 5, 8, 10; which covers a pretty good gambit of ages. We went to the store, the eldest retrieved the cart (that's her job) and we started up the aisles. We came upon a section that had unfinished wooden boxes, dishes, shelfs and tiny bird houses. We picked up some bird houses, paint, stickers and beads for about 12 dollars. We took them home and enjoyed 2 hours of painting, and gluing. When done the kids were so proud and they gave them out as Christmas presents to their grandparents.
It was the best day and the kids were so proud. It has become a regular event now at my home. We have the craft day where we pile into the van and go out to find the perfect craft. I have discovered that the kids have become even more creative in what they hunt for and make. Everything from plastic cup piggies to jewelery, to inventive creations made from kitchen utensils.
The dollar store can be a family event. Use it, enjoy it and be creative!
