Quick Christmas tree ornaments kids can make

I love creating things with children and the holidays are a wonderful opportunity to do just that. There are numerous simple to make Christmas tree ornaments that children enjoy putting together. These are relatively inexpensive and turn out very cute.

Painting plain glass globes is always fun. The craft and hobby stores will often stock these unadorned glass ornaments for you to add your creative designs. An inexpensive "paint" to use is fingernail polish. Many of the dollar stores will stock many different colors and textures so your ornaments can have sparkles and colors. The small brushes of the nail polish are the right size for children to hold and the short length makes it easy to paint the globes.

Another fun ornament to make is candy cane reindeer. You will need to get brown, black and white pipe cleaners, glue-on, pre-made eyes or black and white construction paper, plastic wrapped candy canes and different colored tiny pom-poms. Candy canes come in so many colors (and flavors!) that the variety makes a whole herd of different reindeer. The pipe cleaners are used as the reindeer antlers and are wrapped around the hook part of the cane. Next, glue on the pre-made eyes and pom-pom for the nose. Voila! The reindeer is complete!

Another easy to make ornament is hanging snowmen. For this you will need white, black and red construction paper, permanent markers, scissors and a needle and thread. The snowmen can be traced from different sized round objects such as jar lids onto the white construction paper. The circles must be cut out and increase in size to represent the head, middle and bottom of the snowman. Hats and scarves can be cut out of the red and black paper and glued onto the appropriate sections of circles. Buttons or markers can be used to make the mouth and eyes. The snowman is then put together with the thread attaching the three circles together. The snowman can be decorated on both sides so that as the circles twist on the string, he is always facing forward.

Garland to wrap around the tree is always fun and festive! There are several types of chains to make that kids enjoy putting together. The easiest is cutting strips out of different colors of construction paper and making chains. The strips should not be too long because the chain should not droop. The circles can be make by either stapling or gluing the ends together. The next strip is slipped through the hole and the ends secured. Once completed, this can be draped around the tree.

An edible garland to make is with popcorn, cranberries, and many colored lifesavers. You will need a heavy needle and thread set for this garland. These foods items are strung together with the thread in whatever pattern you like. Some of the more traditional patterns have about ten popcorn, then either two or three lifesavers or cranberries in a repetitive series. The lifesavers will need to be threaded through the holes and secured sideways in order to see the colors. The children can enjoy munching on the (unbuttered!) popcorn and lifesavers in-between stitches!

The holidays are about being with family. These fun and decorative activities will be remembered and cherished by everyone that participates!
