Launched in 2001, Miniclip, the brainchild of UK's Rob Small, grew to reach over 1 million users worldwide within the first few months of its debut. Today, the massive gaming site caters to the needs of over 40 million individual people across the globe. Miniclip is second only to Facebook as the biggest privately owned business in the world (source: UKPR Wire). Popular games like Runescape and Club Penguin used the site to target their teen audience.
Miniclip target an audience of 10-24 year olds and this is apparent in their website. On every page, there is a gull alphabetized game list with the over 300 games that are hosted on the site. You can also subscribe to a game feed or newsletter that updates you on new games and such.
I was surprised at how little time it took me to load each game, pleasantly surprised. In an article released by Miniclip, it says that 98% of their users are on high bandwith.
All the games on the website are free to play; sports games, massive multiplayer games, action games, puzzle games, more than 90% are flash games. Unlike other gaming sites around, Miniclip also offers a download page that lists all of the games available for download. These games are free and contain no spyware or malicious advertising, in fact, the ones I downloaded contained no advertising at all. The games are full versions, and not trials. Miniclip boasts that their games can be played "anywhere, anytime" and that is true.
The site is updated quite frequently, new games are added on a regular basis. This is one game site that stands above the gulch of other plagued with ads and spyware. Miniclip has repeatedly topped charts across the globe and is the universal, # 1 site for free games and chances are, it's going to stay up there for quite a while.
I could find nothing wrong with the site or the games hosted within. None were vulgar or offensive, in fact, a lot of the games were quite educational. There's one based on the 2008 election in the US where players run campaigns against each other, several others are word, strategy, or puzzle games. There are also season-themed games, as of today there are 41 Christmas games online.
Not only does Miniclip offer free games, they also offer free cartoons and E-cards as well. The cartoons are like what you'll find on Cartoon Network's Boomerang: Bug's Bunny, Looney Tunes, Hanna-Barbera and such. The E-cards, much to my beliefs, were unrelated to the games on the site. They were real E-cards with birthday wishes or Christmas wishes. I browsed through a few of the cards and they were heart-warming and quite entertaining.
As with most gaming sites, Miniclip offers you a membership. However, when I clicked to join, I was greeted with a screen that said the section is down for maintenance. I expect the player's site is undergoing some server modifications and some tweaks and changes are being done to upgrade the membership feature.
It was truly a pleasure to review the site, now I have something to fill my dreary past times! Miniclip has proven to be a site for new gamers and hardcore ones alike. The site is definitely a must-see!
