SEVEN WAYS TO STAY ON TRACK IN THE NEW YEAR
Are you serious about changing your life? Make your resolutions carefully!
1. Be specific.
Have a plan and write it down. Instead of some vague idea of losing weight, plan out what resources you are going to use, set your goals, and prioritize the steps you are going to take to help yourself achieve them. You can get a head start on the new year by starting right away, before the magic date arrives. Then you will really have something to celebrate.
2. Be realistic.
Just one resolutions is fine. If you have several, don't start carrying them out all at the same time. It takes at least 21 days to get used to a new habit. Think baby steps, get the help you need, and don't expect to wake up to a perfect reality when it's all over. There is no magic bullet for making good things happen, but if you keep putting one foot in front of the other, you will get somewhere.
3. Be accountable.
Make partner support part of your plan. Pick someone with similar issues, so you can encourage each other. When you need a sympathetic ear or a kick in the butt, call a friend. Track your progress, and disclose how you are doing. It may be embarrassing to admit that you blew it, but that's the first step to getting back on track.
4. Remind yourself.
Put encouraging reminders and slogans where you can see them frequently. Think of it as an ad campaign for change. Keep a journal. Use affirmations. Hang out with people who will cheer you on. Think YES I CAN.
5. Collect a reward.
When you reach a specific milestone, give yourself a treat. If you quit smoking, don't put all the money in the home improvement fund spend at least half of it on yourself. If you lose five pounds, don't go to the donut shop to celebrate. Buy a new T-shirt instead, take the afternoon off to play, or get a massage. Positive reinforcement increases your desire to do the right thing.
6. Visualize
Imagine yourself performing the new behavior. Imagine the feelings of accomplishment. Keep your eyes on the prize. Even if you took a step backwards today, keep thinking ahead.
7. Take it easy on yourself.
Everybody messes up sometimes. When that happens, forgive yourself and move on. Punishing yourself will only delay your progress. If you can't get off your case, get a little help from your friends.
Personal change is difficult, but rewarding. There will be good days and bad days. The trick is to get back up one more time than you fall down.
Happy New Year!
