Tips for closing the achievement gap between whites and blacks in K12 schools

My white children, attend a high school with a 70/30 student population ratio, seventy per cent are black. Thirty per cent are a mixture of white, Arabic, Mexican and others. These kids are striving to just be American students. They are facilitated by a diverse faculty.

There are gaps in education achievement and other areas, in my opinion because of unforgiveness and lack of acceptance. The students appear to do a much better job at this then some adults. I have no doubt that our children, and their children will close the gap as they stop racism, labeling, discrimination and hate.

The top five top students at their high school are diverse. This is a charter school. We chose to change from our districts public schools. Their achievement gap, revolved around the accepted standard of intelligence. One of my sons, had a learning difference that was never addressed.

Enrolling in a public charter school, is my best tip for closing the gap. All students are respected, treated equally, wear uniforms, and adhere to zero tolerance. The teachers, some professors, and doctorates are dedicated. Achievement is expected and encouraged.

Charter schools are sponsored ,accountable and assisted by a local university, the states school authorities, and/or a local business. The school board consists of business or community leaders, teachers and parents who are often visible and easily contacted. The head master or principle, and faculty are approachable and concerned about your child's future.

A small student/teacher ratio, meaningful academic philosophy, and additional programs such as music, and language, allows children to learn and excel at their level, pace and style. Academic coaching is offered at the high school to all students. The student's self esteem comes first with learning differences, by both the K-8 and 9-12 charter schools we've experienced.

When provided with the same quality education, the students have more chances for achievement. The opportunity must be available for all children. My son once asked me why there were so many black kids. Sadly I explained, that some of their neighborhood schools, were not very good, and their parents wanted the best, just like we want for you.

Young children, think the world and everyone is equal and treated the same. Racism and gaps are taught and learned. Last year, our foreign exchange student, did not comprehend racism and the way some American people acted. She dated a young black school friend, just a cute guy who later
