If you are contemplating purchasing a car, first of all do some homework on your own prior to going car shopping. It is wise to do this whether you are buying a new or used car. Car dealers will treat you with more respect when you have some knowledge; especially if you can refer to their competitors' deals.
Before you go car shopping, make sure you have the following items:
1) Your driver's license, of course. If the license has an old address; take another form of identification to show your current home address. Many dealers will even accept a current utility bill (phone, gas, or etc.)
2) Your proof of insurance (if you have a trade-in, or you already have insurance and want to add the purchase to the police). If you do not have insurance; most dealers will include it for the first 30 days. Make certain that you inquire, so that you obtain liability as soon as possible if they do not.
3) Your checkbook (if you are putting a down payment by check.
4) I recommend taking at least one credit card - even if you are paying by check or cash. Some dealers will ask for a credit card as a second identification.
5) Make sure you have two references. Most dealers will ask for the names of several references. So you will want the addresses and telephone numbers of friends and family members.
6) If you have a trade-in; you will need the current registration because you will have to sign it over to the dealership. If you have an outstanding balance on the car; the dealer will have to know to whom you owe.
7) Call the Better Business Bureau or AAA (if you are a member) to ask if there are any complaints against the particular car dealership.
8) If you have gotten quotes on a particular type of car, for example, if you are looking for a Toyota Solara; take those with you to share with the dealership(s). Sometimes a dealer will underbid those places in order to get your business.
10) Finally, some dealerships will reqire a job verification or pay stub showing your salary; however, there are others who will "take your word" regarding your monthly or annual salary. Just to be safe, if you have something, for example, your most recent pay stub; do take it with you. If you are retired or on social security, etc., take a copy of your letter showing allocations. If your benefits are automatically deposited; do take your latest bank statement showing this.
These are the most important items that you will need to purchase a new or used car. As stated previously, some dealerships will not ask for all of these; however, be prepared because you might decide that you want a new car (like I did) after visiting several of them. You would want to be able to drive the car off the lot the same day!
Most of all, car shopping can be a pleasant endeavor if you are prepared.
