Choosing the right sewing machine

by Belinda Beasley

Created on: December 22, 2007

People often wonder how to choose the right sewing machine, and there really isn't a right or wrong answer to this question. Purchasing a sewing machine is much like purchasing a car; some like to drive Fords, others prefer to drive Toyotas. It's the same with sewing machines; some of us like the Janome brand, while others prefer Husqvarna/Viking.

It is always wise to buy a sewing machine from a reputable dealer so that you can have dealer support in the future, both for any repairs that may need to be made, and also for regular maintenance. Once you have decided what features you like in a sewing machine, visit some local dealers in your area and "test drive" the sewing machines that you are interested in purchasing. Having some hands on experience will help you decide whether you like a particular sewing machine or not.

There are several features that I like in a sewing machine. Some of these are: a horizontal thread holder, a see through top drop in bobbin, a free arm (this is very helpful when sewing set in sleeves), and an automatic needle threader (especially good for those over-40 eyes!, to name a few.

Each sewing machine brand has something unique to offer, and it is up to you, the consumer, to decide what is right for you. You will have a much more enjoyable sewing experience if you "bond" with your sewing machine, and only you can decide whether the bottom of the line mechanical sewing machine or the top of the line sewing/embroidery machine is right for you and your particular sewing needs.
