Top comfort items for dorm rooms

If you have ever been to a dorm room then you know first hand that they small, sparsely furnished, cold, and colorless. This can be scary, even depressing for a college student who is away from home for the first time, or even for the junior or senior who is just itching to get back home after living like this for two or three years already.

Ask yourself this, when you think of home, and comfort, what comes to mind? Bed, warm, cozy and soft. Home cooked meals, hot and delicious, full of flavor and all of your favorites specially prepared by mom's loving hands. A favorite reading chair, a book and your most comfortable throw to ward off a chilly day. A hot cup of tea. Waking up in the morning to soft slippers and thick robe. Being able to see your mom and dad each night before bed, your brothers and sisters or best friends too.

Now, ask yourself how you can make this happen in your dorm room? Got it? OK. Let's get busy. Here is what we need:

1. We need to fix up that standard issue bed. Down mattress pad, good cotton sheets, an electric blanket, and coordinating comforter set that is functional in that it is appealing to the eye, yet usable.

2. We have to work on the food situation. Check about what the rules of your dorm are, but the possibilities of a hot plate, coffee pot, mini refrigerator, and or microwave would go a long way to making your little dorm more like home.

3. A reading nook- A good bean bag chair is a great and inexpensive idea, plus some shelves to help save on floor space, a nice thick blanket to wrap up in, a good reading lamp- perhaps one that is a standing lamp, and your favorite mug all help pull this together.

4. A hook on the back of your door to hang your thick robe, and some nice comfy slippers by your bed (check out Lands End- they have the heaviest robes!)

5. Pictures on the walls, on your desk, anywhere you can stick them of your loved ones.

Some other things that will make college life easier would be a plastic storage bin with a handle (smaller in size) that you can take to the shower with you that has all of your toiletries in it. If you will be doing your own laundry, another one for the car that has your laundry soap in it. And some hampers for your room that you can put your laundry in.

There's no place like home, but if you think like home, improvising will be a breeze.
