When one looks at the controversy that has risen from "The Golden Compass," we each have to really ask ourselves, why. We seem to be in an age of zealots who want to denounce anything that they deem as anti-religion or more specifically anti-Christian. Is this reality or simply a way to put God out there and in print?
Stories have been told for as long as humans have been able to communicate. Whether it was a picture on a cave wall, story telling by a campfire, a novel, a television show, or a movie. The mediums used are as diverse as the stories themselves. Each story is up for interpretation, but be wary when interpreting them with an agenda already created.
It is important to look at a story without bias, there are meanings in all stories, but it is the individual who decides what that meaning is. "the Golden Compass," is a strong story of a girls strength. It has a heroin in a little girl that never gives up and stands up to bad people. It weaves a magical world that is meant to inspire children. I have 3 girls and I will tell you not one of them turned to me at the end to have a discussion about religion. They turned to me a simply said, "wow, that was awesome!"
Maybe we should all give credit to the children. These children have grown up with more fantasy and creative story telling then any generation. My children know, truly know, the difference between reality and fiction. They are smarter than we give them credit for. Show me a child who is now an atheist due to this movie and I will apologize to the Pope himself.
