As the holidays approach there is one thing that I look forward to. It is of course the classic stop motion Christmas specials that define the festive season. These timeless classics are not only entertaining, but surprisingly durable.
Every year I scan the TV guide looking for "Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer," knowing that Rudolph will rise above his persecution and with his best friends, escape the monster and save Christmas. "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," the true story of Andy Rooney's immortality. Heat Miser, Jack Frost, Shiny New Year, all entertaining and hilarious in their innocence.
This is not Pixar, nor Disney, but I know that I watched these specials with my parents, and now I watch them with my kids. The joy and spirit I see it bring to my children is the same joy it gave me and my siblings. There have not been many seasonal specials that really bring in the season. We can only hope that this special group of Christmas specials continue to be played, teaching life lessons on the meaning of Christmas and morals that need to be taught in this day and age. When my 5 year old looks at me and says, "bullies are bad, daddy." I smile because rudolph has shown her that.
I look forward to sitting with my grandchildren watching and singing aloud as I do with my kids and as I did with my parents so long ago.
