What it means to be a blogger

I am on the bus. Overhearing two little old ladies talk, I think that their conversation would be the start of a good blog entry. I pull out a notebook and jot the idea down.

I am sure that I am not the only blogger who has done this. Nor do I imagine that I am the only blooger who has laid awake at night, thinking about their next blog entry.
I swear that I am not obsessed with my blog, though I can point out a couple of bloggers that are. But I will admit that I spend a certain percentage of my time thinking about my blog.

Am I your typical blogger? I am not sure. I have never talked to more than a couple of them. But I suspect that we have a common pattern of thinking. In my case, it is not nearly as focused as some bloggers (who seem to eat, drink and sleep though their blogs). It should be noted that I am a writer; thinking about what I am going to write next is just a part of my life, and being involved in more writing projects than just blogs, I tend to be more scattered and less focused on my blog. But the principal is the same, I spend a lot of time thinking about what would make good copy.

Thinking about what make a good blog entry is something that I think is part of it means to be a blooger. Oh, there are bloggers out there who say that they do not care if anyone reads their blogs, but they still have their audience (even if that audience is only themselves).

Being a blogger means being creative. Even if it is only far a couple of minutes a day. It means rolling up your sleeves and writing something down.

Occasionally, it means letting the entire world see how crazy your life is. Or how normal it is. It is allowing others to see a glimpse into one's own thoughts.

Or at least, it does if you are not merely advertising someone else's product. Blogging has not only became a way of life for some people, but also a livelihood.

Being a blogger means that your little voice is added to the roar of all the other little voices of the world. And the little voices have been noticed, hence the sponsored posts and breaking news stories.

Being a blogger means having access to your own little printing press, of running though the virtual streets pasting up broadsides about what we think and believe. Being a blogger means knowing that we are free to express our opinions.

Maybe our opinions will be heard, maybe they won't. It does not matter, being a blogger means expressing what one thinks whether people pay attention or not. For we do not start blogging for the masses, rather we start blogging for ourselves.

In the beginning, all bloggers have an audience of one: themselves. And whether we know it or not, we continue to write for that audience of one. Sometimes we cater to a bigger, and perhaps more profitable, audience. But always there is that one set of eyes that read the things that we type on the keyboard, and that is what being a blogger is about; writing for ourselves is the root of what being a blogger is all about.
