Fabric isn't just for clothes anymore! More and more people are getting creative and using fabric in ways its never been used before. One such way is to use fabric to accent the rooms in their homes. Here are some ways that fabric is being used for home decoration, and not just for throw pillows and swags.
1. Create a patch work ceiling. Why put up a regular drop ceiling when you can create so much more? What you will need for this project is a staple gun, some padding (the kind you would use for quilting), and some calico fabrics of coordinating colors. After you get your tracks installed for the ceiling tiles, but before installing each tile, you will take each tile, and wrap the front side in the padding, then wrap the tile in your chosen fabric and then staple the fabric and the padding to the tile. You will do this for each tile, and then insert the tiles in an alternating pattern to create a patch work pattern on your ceiling.
2. It's the new wallpaper. That's right, you can cover your walls with it. The thing here is that you have to have good walls, or you have to have good fabric to make the bad walls less noticeable. Confused? Don't be. Hanging fabric on your walls is just like wall papering. Instead of glue, you use starch and the dipping method. If you choose a fabric that has no print, is thin, and you have bumpy walls, you may see all of the imperfections on your walls. But, if you choose for that same wall a calico (which are great for this by the way) or a printed fabric which will play with the dimensions of the wall, you won't notice the imperfections as much. Things to watch out for, would be bunching, and thick spots which can leave darker spots if not taken care of right away. And the great thing is, if you don't like it, and want to change it, or if you live in an apartment and need to take it down, liquid fabric softener will do the trick.
3. Cornices. Get out your hammer, find some scraps of wood, and use the left over padding. Here is what you do. Build a 3-sided box that will fit over your curtain rod. Then, you pad it and cover with fabric- which is held in place with the staple gun- ladies best friend when it comes to fabric. Once you have the cornice covered in fabric, you simply attach to the wall over the curtain rod, and now you have a jazzed up window treatment.
4. Picture frames. Why spend a fortune having pictures professionally mounted when you can do it yourself with a little bit of time and patience? That's all it takes. That,
