There are many ideas for home sewn holiday gift ideas for moms. Many of these gift ideas are quick and easy sewing projects while others take a bit more time, and might be a little bit more challenging as well.
A few years ago, Sew News Magazine published a free pattern for a neck pillow. (The pattern for this neck pillow might be included in the archives on their website, although I haven't checked this out for myself.) I traced this pattern and sewed one for my mom. She absolutely loved it! This neck pillow is designed to be placed on the fold of the fabric and looks very much like the capital letter "C". It only takes about half a yard of fabric, and although I like to sew mine out of 100% cotton fabric, you could also make these neck pillows out of fleece, satin, or even velvet. There are only two pieces to be sewn, right sides together, using a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Remember to leave a space for turning the neck pillow right side out. Once the pillow has been sewn together, fill it with fiberfill and hand sew the opening closed.
Another great gift for moms is a set of matching placemats, table runners, and cloth napkins. Commercial sewing patterns are available for these items, but it would be very simple to create your own patterns as well. The entire set could be made reversible by using different fabrics on each side. For example, one side could be a Christmas theme while the opposite side could be sewn out of Thanksgiving fabric. The cloth napkins could be made reversible by sewing them on a conventional sewing machine, turning right side out and top stitching them closed, or you could do a rolled hem on the serger, which is a nice finish for cloth napkins.
Moms also might like small sachets to go in their drawers or closets. These are easily made using fabric scraps. Sachets could be sewn out of organza, satin, or cotton, and they could also be embellished in a variety of ways. Small seed pearls could be hand sewn onto sachets made out of organza. These sachets could also be monogrammed or embroidered with machine embroidery prior to sewing them together. Decide on what shape and size you would like the sachets to be, add the desired seam allowance, and sew, leaving a space for turning right side out. Prior to sewing the opening closed, pour some potpourri into the sachet, and then stitch it closed, either by hand or machine.
Some moms still use aprons and might appreciate receiving a new apron. Since aprons seem to be becoming more popular again, there are quite a few sewing patterns for aprons on the market today. Many of these patterns are for vintage styles, which some moms might appreciate. The barbecue style apron might be fun to sew as well. These could be sewn using a commercial pattern, or you could purchase one already made at a hobby store and embellish it by embroidering a design on the front or painting a design on the front of the apron with fabric paint.
Although it can be challenging, I also think it's fun to use creativity and imagination to come up with different ideas for home sewn gifts for moms.
