Yes, there should be a maximum driving age. The United States is consumed with minimum ages. 16 to drive, 18 to vote, 21 to drink, . Why should restrictions be one sided against the young and immature? It was a bit of fun to drive when you were only 14 or 15. Half of that fun was knowing you weren't actually old enough to drive. You may not have been a bad driver, but it was the thrill of getting away with it. Wouldn't it be a bit of fun to drive when your too old to drive? What are the authorities going to do? Ban you?
With age comes deterioration. Fact of life. The eyesight falters. The reflexes slow down. The comfort breaks come more often. We don't think about what's involved in driving but there is a lot going on with and around us when we get behind the wheel of a car. That's why drinking is not allowed while driving and rightly so. The reflexes are slower. The judgment is impaired. And the confidence in what can be achieved excel the abilities. Sounds a bit Methuselahian to me.
I think a time comes when we are not our own best judge of whether we are fit to drive or not. No one likes to lose that independence but we must consider the safety of other road users. It's best if the guide is set before the accident.
Of course there are many things to consider when setting this maximum. Some people are very fit into their 80's and 90's. Losing your license should be a milestone. A celebration. Something to be proud of.
"I lost my license today".
"Why's that?"
" I'm 100".
