There are times when you are just not prepared for what may come out the mouth of a child. No matter how many private talks with your children about what to say and what not to say, at times it just does not register in the mind of a 4 year old.
A few months back my sister had her, then 4 year old daughter, in the ladies room. After they came out of the stale to wash their hands, a lady on the rather large side was standing at the sink washing her hands. My niece looked at the lady, stumbled back and fell against the wall and said "Oh my God what happened to you?" The lady looked herself up and down, made sure her clothes were right before she answered and said "is something wrong with my clothes?" My niece said "well did you eat too much?" The lady replied, "I guess I did." My sister was so out done and said to my niece, "say sorry that was not nice." My niece did apologize.
This was certainly one of those moments when you wished the ground would open and swallow you whole. But you realize that you the only way out is through the door. You grab the hand of your little one and head toward the door. Too embarrased to look back, you swing the door open, take a sigh of relief that you made it out of the ladies room; and head off in the sunset.
