The holidays are the perfect time to show your secretary how much you appreciate her. After all, she works hard for you all year long and probably goes above and beyond her duties as a secretary. Many large firms give out holiday bonuses, but that's not considered a holiday gift from you. As a legal secretary for over 25 years, I have listed below what I, and many of my colleagues, think are the top five gifts for the holiday season:

1. Simon Visa Card.

These are great cards that you can buy at any shopping mall. You can make it for any denomination you want and she can use it anywhere Visa is accepted. Just put it in an envelope with a thoughtful card and message, place it in a box and wrap it with a big bow, or better yet, put it in a designer wallet.

2. Gift certificates.

A gift certificate to a nice restaurant would be nice, especially if it's somewhere you think she's never been. Just make it enough to cover a bill for two people; even if she's single, she won't want to go by herself. You can also include a gift certificate to a major department store in the mall - somewhere like Macy's, Burdine's, Nordstrom's, Bloomingdale's, or maybe even Coach). It's best not to choose an obscure boutique where she may not be able to find anything she likes.

3. Winter Wear.

Women love cashmere; a cashmere sweater or shawl is perfect to wear with holiday evening wear. It's something they'll probably never buy for themselves. Or, you might also consider a leather or suede jacket or perhaps a nice coat.

4. Purses and wallets.

Women love purses, especially name-brand purses. You can't go wrong buying something from Coach, Dooney & Bourke, Prada, or any other purse you see in the showcases at the major department stores. Adding a matching wallet would be nice, too.

5. A basket of goodies.

There are many novelty gift shops and stores that will build a basket for you - some come with edible treats, some with perfumes - with just about anything you want. If you want to give more than just the basket, include a gift certificate mentioned above or maybe a "Day at the Spa" gift card.

Whatever you buy, please give it some thought. After all, the holidays only come once a year. Buying her something nice shows how much you appreciate her.
