Short stories: Horror

The Moment of Truth.

Jacob Nichols pulse quickened as he carefully examined the battered face glaring back at him. He squirmed uncomfortably at the undeniably evil features- everything from the tired blood shot eyes, the chipped yellow front teeth, to the three inch scar on the left cheek revealed a life time of wickedness and unimaginable crime. Taking a deep breath Jacob caressed the revolver within his clammy, trembling fingers. He chuckled out loud.

I have got to do this, I just gotta.' He kept repeating over and over again in his aching mind. Just squeeze the trigger and the job will be done. The world will thank you for this.'

For a moment he allowed the gun to drop. Then he refocused his gaze at the repulsive features in front of him.

"How could nature have been so merciless as to craft such a monster?" he muttered out loud.

His heart felt as if it was about to beat out of his chest as he plucked up the courage and released the safety catch. The half bottle of whiskey he had just drunk burned in his stomach. He considered the three dead bodies that the police were about to discover. He imagined what their families must be going through, as tears formed in his eyes.

"This is justice," he stammered out loud. Taking a deep breath, and holding it, in a futile attempt to stop his fingers from shaking, he closed his eyes and squeezed the trigger.

Jacob felt a bullet lodge somewhere in his brain as his eyes popped open. Then for a second or two he felt nothing, yet he still continued to watch his reflection in the full length mirror of the motel room dead in the center of nowhere.

That hole in my forehead looks funny,' he thought. That was his very last thought.

Jacob collapsed onto the floor, and within seconds his life had ceased to be, and he was finally at peace.

Taped to the mirror was a hand written note.

"Forgive me my lifetime of sins- the last life I chose to take was my own. May the Lord forgive me. Jacob Nichols."

The end.
