The question of "Are Professional footballers Overrated ?" is debatable. Players are in my opinion branded with expiration dates,considering the fact that some tend to fit into certain leagues whiles others are not.

A case in point is Andrei Shevchenko formally of AC Milan and currently of Chelsea. Shevchenko was the nightmare of most defenders and goalkeepers during his reign of terror in Italy while playing for Milan. Today, Sheva with Chelsea does not command the respect he once did in Milan although in my opinion Sheva will forever be the best goal poacher the world has ever seen.

Sheva today, with Chelsea is a mere shadow of himself as compared to his days with AC Milan in this vein, i will say he is overrated. For Sheva to be raking in an estimated 140,000 pounds a week with les than 5 goals this season, Abramovich will be biting his lips in disgust for money down the drain.

I bet Sheva will rise again if he finds himself back in Italy with his beloved AC Milan. Another player that comes to mind is none other than Freddy Adu, the so called teenage sensation. Freddy may have benefited immensely from all the media hype surrounding him.Considering the ages at which the likes of Messi,Ronaldinho,Cristiano Ronaldo all house hold names by age 14 and featured in high profile matches for big clubs before 18,Adu's so called talent comes no where near the afore mentioned. Therefore Adu is just a hype and as such overrated like most professional players who are hyped by the media.

In general professional players who show flashes of brilliance end up being overrated and so does players who are past their prime or can not settle in a new environment when bought at astronomical prices.
